British Citizenship Test - Press

Becoming a citizen of any country is not an immediate happening and more so if you want to become a British Citizen. People who want to permanently settle in Britain or become a British Citizen now have to undergo a British Citizen test that will gauge their knowledge about Britain and its people.

The logic behind introducing the test is that if a person wanted to become a citizen of a particular country it is necessary for him/her to show that he/she has full knowledge about the life in that country.

The British Citizen Test attempts to test the person’s knowledge about the life in UK and all the questions are based on the information given in the handbook called “Life in the United Kingdom: A Journey to Citizenship”.

The time period of the test is about 45 minutes and consists of a total of 24 questions; the test is available only in the English language. Level of competency in English that is required for the purpose of this test is ESOL English 3 or above.

In case the person applying for citizenship does not have the required level of competency, then he/she is required to attend English level classes along with citizenship classes. This would enable the person to learn both the language as well as details about living in the United Kingdom. Questions asked in the British citizenship test include information about the rights and duties of UK citizens, information regarding the formal institutions in UK, role of Britain within the European Union as well as in the world, its role in the United Nations, information about the cuisine, culture, customs of UK, the dialects spoken in UK, the kind of government, its demography, religion etc.

Any person wishing to take the British Citizen Test can do so in the 90 centers present across UK and need to book their place for the test. The British Citizen test is conducted online and one should have basic computer skills. However, the test centers act as training centers in cases where people are not comfortable with using the computer. Prior to taking the test you need to book for it either by telephone or in person and you will be given the day and time for the test. While registering you need to provide your complete name, current postal code, Home office Reference Number, nationality, country and place of birth, and the method of ID Validation. On the day of the test, you should carry a proof of identity and postcode with you. Cost of the test is about £34 and if you want to cancel or postpone it then you have to let the examiners know 7 days in advance. In case you cannot do so you will lose £10 as administration cancellation fees.

There are facilities to take a practice test before the real one and also for reappearing in a test in case of failure. There are no limits as to the number of times you can take the test but it is better to be prepared as the test is expensive.

On the day of the test, the supervisor will explain the conditions under which the test will be administered and will record your personal details and then you take the test. After completion of the test, the examiner will announce your results and in order to pass the test you need to get about 75% marks.

On passing the test you get a pass notification letter that needs to be submitted along with your form and other details for getting citizenship or leave to remain indefinitely in UK. In case you fail the test, you will have to wait for about 7 days to appear for it again and till you pass the test you cannot apply for citizenship in the UK. The pass notification letter is a very important document and should be kept very safely and in case it is lost, the only remedy available is to take the test again.
